Design of Silicon-Based Photonic Devices and Integrated Circuits for Optical Signal Processing and Calculations

Dr. Kiyoto Takahata

Graduate School of Information, Production and Systems, Waseda University, Japan
Professor

Synopsis

The explosive growth of AI—particularly generative AI and large language models (LLMs)—has created a pressing need to address the exponential increase in data processing volume and power consumption within data centers and telecommunications infrastructure. In response to this urgent challenge, optoelectronic convergence technology based on silicon photonics has attracted significant attention in recent years, and products incorporating this technology for on-board signal transmission are beginning to be introduced. To meet the growing demand for signal processing with high-speed, lower latency, and lower power consumption, the application of optoelectronic convergence technology to signal processing and calculation holds great promise. In this speech, an overview of all-optical logic gates and photonic computational integrated circuits based on silicon multimode interferometers (MMIs) and microring resonators (MRRs) will be presented, focusing primarily on their design. Furthermore, since high-density integration is required for chip-to-chip interconnections on a board, the miniaturization of photonic components is also a key challenge. In this presentation, the design of ultra-compact optical switches and modulators using photonic crystal slow-light waveguides will be also introduced.

Biographical Sketch

Kiyoto Takahata was received the B. E. and M. E. degrees in physical engineering from Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan, in 1988 and 1990, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in electronics and applied physics from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo, Japan, in 2010. In 1990, he joined NTT Opto-electronics Laboratories, Kanagawa, Japan, where he was engaged in research on high-speed monolithically integrated photoreceivers, ultrafast optical packet processing based on optoelectronic circuits, and semiconductor lasers. He has been with Waseda University since 2016 and currently serves as a professor in the Graduate School of Information, Production and Systems, Kitakyusyu, Japan. His primary research interests include the design and analysis of optical signal processing devices and circuits based on silicon photonics technology, as well as ultra-compact optical switches and modulators using photonic crystals. Prof. Takahata is a member of the IEEE Photonics Society, Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP), and the Institute of Electronics, Information, and Communication Engineers of Japan (IEICE).
